Where this comes from
This is a square tile with four thick red diagonal arms running out from the centre like a saltire (X) with blocky, angled ends. A small navy flower or cross sits at the centre, with four more navy crosses at the top, bottom, left and right edges. The red fills the diagonals and the navy marks the compass points, so the two colours never compete. The diagonals are outlined with backstitch. This motif comes from The Embroiderer's Alphabet: A collection of cross stitch designs that was collated in the late 1800s and is in the public domain.
