Where this comes from

This Gothic cross stitch alphabet, in an Old English style, is taken from The Embroiderer's Alphabet, a classic collection of charted letters, monograms and ornamental cross stitch designs compiled by Thérèse de Dillmont and published by D.M.C. The original designs are in the public domain; I redrew the charts for Heddle by hand. There are several alphabets in the book, as the title suggests. I started with this one because I've always loved Old English lettering, and I especially like the lower case letters, which I plan to use in my next sampler. I copied it across stitch by stitch to make sure all the backstitching sat in the right place. I haven't used it in a pattern yet but I think this is probably quite a fiddly one to stitch and not for the fainthearted.
