Notes

The horse chestnut is the next leaf in Heddle's autumn collection, and this one is personal. Where I grew up, there was a giant horse chestnut tree at the back of the village rec. Every autumn we'd head over to collect conkers, filling pockets and bags and comparing our finds. I can't see a horse chestnut without thinking of those times after school, so it had to be part of this collection. The horse chestnut is a familiar sight across English villages, parks, streets and playgrounds. Its leaf is easy to spot: large leaflets fan out from a single point on a long stem, like an open hand. This pattern uses 2 colours It's shown in soft sage green with brown veins and stem, the colour of a leaf that hasn't quite turned. Stitch it on its own as a bookmark, ornament or greetings card, or combine it with the other autumn leaves on a larger autumn sampler.
